Hershey, PA
“We will completely renovate the course in order to re-establish its historical standing. The 1940 PGA Championship was held here, (Nelson beat Snead in a playoff). The course has also hosted numerous LPGA events.
Our design goals are to return the West Course to the national prominence it once enjoyed. Few people realize the place in history that the West Course holds. During the early years the West Course held the distinction of having two World Golf Hall of Fame inductees at the helm. Henry Picard was at Hershey from 1934 to 1939. During that time he won 22 of his 26 world wide wins including the 1938 Masters and the 1939 PGA Championship. Ben Hogan came to the West Course in 1941 and remained until 1951. During his tenure at Hershey, Hogan won 52 of his 64 titles including 6 of his 9 major Championships. No other club can make that claim.
We will re-create the classic features of this 1930 Maurice McCarthy course while modernizing the course to add strategy, playability and length. We will incorporate new teeing ground for all skill levels including a set of “family tees” for beginners. The bunkers will be reconfigured and adjusted to incorporate modern shot values as well. New turf grasses will be used to accommodate today’s environmental aspects of better water management and habitat creation.
On the technical front, we will install a new irrigation system and design for better drainage to control minor flooding. We will address safety concerns and logistical movement throughout the property which is bisected by a number of roads. The footprint of the original course will be changed only slightly accomplish these objectives.
We are fortunate to be associated with Hershey Country Club, specifically The West Course. We believe our work restoring The Old White Course at the Greenbrier and our work at other great private clubs prompted Hershey Country Club to bring us on board. We are profoundly honored that our first work in Pennsylvania is for this wonderful club.
